Safe Driving During School Hours

Did you know that students are 70 times more likely to arrive at school safely on a bus than in a private vehicle? That’s because school busses are the most regulated vehicles on the road. Among other safety features, school busses include protective seating, high crush standards, and rollover protection. School busses are also designed to be highly visible on the road. And while sadly, 4-6 children die each year on a school bus, that is still less than 1 percent of all traffic fatalities nationwide.[1]

So why don’t school busses have seatbelts? The school bus is designed very differently from a passenger vehicle. They have a different restraint system referred to as “compartmentalization”. With this concept in use, children are protected from impacts by heavy, closely spaced seats that have energy-absorbing seat backs.

Speaking of passenger vehicles, what about the ambitious teen who is finally able to skip the bus and drive to school? We all craved that independence too.

There are features built into some vehicles like automatic emergency braking, rear view camera, blind spot detection, and lane departure warning, that can be very helpful for teen drivers.

There are also apps that can be accessed on your smart phone that will track your teen’s speed, phone usage, and location. Most of these apps will need to be downloaded on both the guardian’s phone, and the teen’s phone. Check your app store for options. Popular ones include Mama bear, Automatic, and TrueMotion Family Safe Driving. There are plenty of safety options available for teen drivers. The key is convincing them to use them.[1]
